Microsoft Launches LinkedIn Live, Beta Live Video Streaming Service

Last updated:

Microsoft acquired LinkedIn over in 2016, paying $26.2 billion in cash for the world’s largest professional social network and the company has now started beta testing a new video streaming service called LinkedIn Live.

LinkedIn Live is an invite-only affair in the United States at the moment. Those who accept the invitation and choose to participate can broadcast live video in real-time to certain groups, or even to the entire LinkedIn world.

LinkedIn is aiming to provide organisations and individuals with the ability to host real-time conferences, Q&A sessions and product announcements on their pages. LinkedIn hope that the service will be used to cover launch events, graduations, award ceremonies and even be used by organisations to release their earnings calls.

At the moment, LinkedIn is being very selective about doling out invites. It wants to showcase only polished videos. To help with that, the service is leaning on Microsoft and its Azure Media Services to handle the encoding. For the most part, Microsoft has allowed LinkedIn to operate on its own since acquiring the outfit, but is making an exception in this case.

LinkedIn is partnering with various streaming software services to allow content creators to use professional broadcasting features like Wirecast, Switcher Studio, Wowza Media Systems, Socialive and Brandlive. This will most likely lay the foundations for high-quality TV-style broadcasts on LinkedIn.
