Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo to Launch Cross-Platform ‘AirDrop’

Last updated:

Xiaomi today announced the Inter-Transfer Alliance group. Joined by Oppo, and Vivo, the three are teaming up on a cross-platform file transfer protocol, similar to Apple’s AirDrop.

The alliance enables one-click file transfer between smartphones from Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo. The transfer supports multiple file formats such as photos, videos, songs, documents, etc and is fast (up to 20 MBps), stable, and power-efficient. There’s no need for any third-party apps.

Currently, the Alliance has only three members, but Xiaomi is welcoming others to join.

A beta of the technology will be released by the end of this month. Google had introduced NFC and Wi-Fi-based Android beam in 2011. But it is removing Beam from Android Q and replacing it with a new “Fast Share” technology in the share sheet.

Fast Share is a Google Play Services feature, unavailable in smartphones in China, which probably explains why Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are working together to roll out their own version.

Huawei has its own media transfer feature called Huawei Share OneHop for its smartphone and Matebook lineup.
