MediaTek to release 64-bit quad and octa-core chips for smartphones next quarter

MediaTek is planning on releasing 64-bit quad and octa-core chips for the smartphone market, next quarter. The company is moving a month ahead of schedule in releasing both chips.

The MT6732 will be the quad-core solution, while the MT6752 will be an octa-core version of the 64-bit processor.

Ever since Apple released the 64-bit A7 processor for the Apple iPhone 5s, other nanufacturers have been hard at work to offer their own 64-bit chips.

MediaTek will target low to mid-end devices initially, and will be facing a ton of competition from the likes of Qualcomm, Marvell, Broadcom, NVIDIA and Intel.

By the second half of this year, both segments of the market will see 64-bit and octa-core technology as being mainstream.[signoff predefined=”Enjoy this?” icon=”icon-users”][/signoff]
