Dixons Carphone data breach affected 10 million customers

Back in June, Dixons Carphone revealed details of an attempt by hackers to gain access to one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores in July 2017. At the time, Dixons admitted to the hack affecting 5.9 million customers.

However, the ICO has today issued a statement stating that the incident affected the personal data of 10 million records, which is significantly higher than initially stated.

“Dixons Carphone reported a data breach to the ICO in June. The company has now confirmed that the incident affected the personal data of 10 million records, which is significantly higher than initially stated.

“Our investigation into the incident is ongoing and we will take time to assess this new information. In the meantime, we would expect the company to alert all those affected in the UK as soon as possible and to take all steps necessary to reduce any potential harm to consumers.”

At the time, Dixons said they wrote to those customers whose personal data was breached, “to inform them, to apologise, and to give them advice on any protective steps they should take”. Dixons Carphone said there was no evidence of fraud as a result of the incident and added that it was working with leading cybersecurity experts to examine and strengthen its systems.

The individual or group responsible has not been identified and investigations into the incident are ongoing. In May of this year, Dixons Carphone announced the closure of 92 Carphone Warehouse stores due to changing consumer habits.
