Windows 10 will feature biometric security

Last updated:

In an effort to help them transition away from passwords, Microsoft has announced that biometric features will be part of the upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

Windows 10 will support the Fast Identification Online (FIDO) security system by using biometric authentication.

After submitting design specifications to the FIDO Alliance that are to be “incorporated within the FIDO 2.0 Technical Specifications,” the upcoming version of Windows will be featuring the latest inputs.

The software will ensure users won’t have to remember multiple usernames and passwords while working on their Windows 10 devices.

In a blog post, Microsoft’s Dustin Ingalls said,

“Transitioning away from passwords and to a stronger form of identity is one of the great challenges that we face in online computing, and we believe FIDO authentication, which is the subject of great discussion here at the White House summit, is the pathway to success.

To address this challenge we joined the FIDO Alliance, where we are working alongside major industry partners to change the nature of authentication by developing specifications that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that supplant reliance on passwords to more securely authenticate users of online services.”

In addition to serving enterprises, the new capabilities will also benefit consumer devices like Outlook.com and OneDrive. Members of Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program can already begin to test out the new features.
