Google release new Android development IDE, Android Studio 1.0

Last updated:

Google has released version 1.0 of its new Android development IDE, Android Studio.

Similar to the Chrome release channels, Android Studio will continue to receive updates on four different release channels: Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary. Canary builds are at the bleeding edge of development, while the stable release is fully tested. With this range of release channels you can choose how quickly you want to get the latest features for Android Studio.

Android Studio is built on the open-source IntelliJ IDEA (Community Edition) Java IDE, and features multi-screen and multi-APK build support, which aligns with Google’s approach to Android development. It’s able to generate various APKs that can be uploaded to the Play Store with a limited set of features based on device type, performance and size.

Highlighted features:

  • Built on IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition, the popular Java IDE by JetBrains.
  • Flexible Gradle-based build system.
  • Build variants and multiple APK generation.
  • Expanded template support for Google Services and various device types.
  • Rich layout editor with support for theme editing.
  • Lint tools to catch performance, usability, version compatibility, and other problems.
  • ProGuard and app-signing capabilities.
  • Built-in support for Google Cloud Platform, making it easy to integrate Google Cloud Messaging and App Engine.

The app is available for Windows, OS X and Linux, and is available with an Eclipse migration tool to port existing projects.

Android Studio 1.0 is available to download now from here.
