HMD unveils 3 Android Smartphones and brings back the Nokia 3310

Last updated:

HMD showcased their newest Nokia-branded phones at MWC today and as expected, the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 appeared, and the international variants of the ‘phablet’-sized Nokia 6.

Rumours that HMD was going to reboot the legendary Nokia 3310 device proved correct. In addtion, Nokia’s 3310 phone has been relaunched nearly 17 years after its debut.

The new phones are not manufactured and sold by Nokia but by HMD Global, another Finnish company, which has licensed the Nokia brand.

The Nokia 6 had already launched in China. Its international variant has a 5.5-inch full HD screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB RAM+64GB storage, 16 MP rear camera+8MP front camera and 3000 mAh battery.

The Nokia 6 is built out of a single block of 6000 series aluminium. It also comes with a smart audio amplifier, dual speakers allow consumers to experience a deeper bass and unmatched clarity, and Dolby Atmos. It will come in four colours: Matte Black, Silver, Tempered Blue and Copper.

A separate Arte edition will come with an additional 64GB storage and 4GB RAM, encased in a black high gloss package and will retail at €299.

The Nokia 5 is also made out of a block 6000 series aluminium, but at a smaller scale. Gorilla Glass display is 5.2”. Inside, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 with the Adreno 505 graphics processor. It is available in four colours Matte Black, Silver, Tempered Blue and Copper.

Nokia 3 meanwhile will also come with an aluminium frame and a Gorilla Glass screen, as well as an 8MP wide aperture cameras in front and back. It’s also available in four colours: Silver White, Matte Black, Tempered Blue and Copper White.

HMD Global is using the Nokia brand to gun for the low-end, mid-range segment of the market, with pure Android, premium built devices and all will get Google Assistant.

Nokia 3310 is back

Nearly 17 years after its debut, Nokia’s 3310 phone has been relaunched and qualifies as a “feature phone” rather than a smartphone as it only provides limited internet facilities.

It relies on 2.5G connectivity and is powered by the S30+ operating system, which allows web browsing but has a much smaller range of apps than Android or iOS. Its single camera is also restricted to two megapixels.

However, its advantage over more powerful handsets is its battery life. HMD says the colour-screened phone has up to a month’s standby time and delivers more than 22 hours of talk time.

Its launch price is£41.51  ($51,75 / €49).
