BBM Enterprise brings MPOP, Desktop, Windows, macOS support and more

BlackBerry has rolled out BBM Enterprise v1.2, and it is a fairly extensive upgrade bringing enhancements for iOS, Android, and the introduction of  Windows and Mac clients.

The upgrade brings major changes to both the BBM Enterprise Administrator console and the BBM Enterprise 1.2 app.

BBM Enterprise administrator console

The BBM Enterprise adminstrator console will bring new support for IT policies where admins can allow or prevent users from sharing content in a chat, as well as the ability to allow or prevent users from retracting a chat.

Auditing and archiving has been improved and using the existing reporting capability, you can view and receive a report from all the devices registered for a user.

BBM Enterprise 1.2 app

One of the biggest improvements to BBM Enterprise 1.2 is the implementation of Multiple points of presence (MPOP).  This allows users to access their BBM Enterprise account from up to three devices simultaneously.

We already covered how to access BBM Enterprise from multiple devices.

In addition, users will be able to access their BBM Enterprise account from Windows or macOS devices.

If your administrator increases the time allowed for message expiry, tap on the chat header in a 1:1 chat to start a new chat with the updated time allowed

Group chat administration has received a boost and Group chats now have administrators who can add and remove participants, allow participants to invite others to the group chat, add and remove administration capabilities for participants and delete the chat for all participants.  In addition, participants are notified of administrator actions in the chat, so they are not left wondering what has happened.

Security is a priority as always in BBM Enterprise and a new Chat history setting will automatically delete your chat history when you end a chat. Enhancements have also made in the ability to retract chats enhancement – when you retract a chat, the chat and its encryption keys are deleted. Adding a further security layer, BBM Enterprise Voice and Video licensees can no longer accept or place unencrypted BBM Enterprise calls and encrypted voice and video calls now use AES256-GCM

Search results have also been improved. On Android and iOS devices, in a search, if the administrator has enabled the BBM Protected Active Directory Enabled policy, you can now view the contact card and tap it to designate a method of communication with the contact.

One of the criticisms of BBM Enterprise was the user status.  BlackBerry have listened and the status field and personal message field are now consolidated into one status field.

iOS users will now be able to share files to BBM Enterprise from another application and can accept incoming BBM Enterprise calls from a locked iOS device.

Finally,  Feed items for your own updates are no longer displayed and ‘Show my country and time’ and blocking contacts are no longer supported.

BBM Enterprise allows employees to take advantage of the speed, reliability and privacy of BBM for faster communication, collaboration and decision making while providing security conscious organizations enhanced security over corporate data.

BBM Enterprise uses a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic library, allowing for an enterprise grade layer of encryption. Messages, attachments, voice and video calls between users on BBM Enterprise are encrypted using a PGP like model. The sender and the recipient have unique public/ private encryption and signing keys. These keys are generated on the device, by the FIPS 140-2 certified cryptographic library, and are held by the enterprise. BBM Enterprise and Blackberry are not involved in the brokering of the key exchanges, and (unlike other solutions) no servers are involved in managing or storing users’ keys. Furthermore, each message uses a new random symmetric key for message encryption. Additionally, each voice and video call also utilizes a new random symmetric key for each call direction.

BBM Enterprise can provide end-to-end encryption for messages, voice calls, and video calls that are sent between BBM Enterprise users in your organization and other BBM Enterprise users, inside or outside of your organization. If your organization doesn’t use Protected Plus, default BBM encryption is used for messages that you exchange with contacts using BBM. Protected Plus can provide end-to-end encryption for all BBM chats, BBM voice calls, and BBM video calls that are sent or received by BBM Enterprise users in your organization, even if the recipient is not a BBM Enterprise user.

BBM Enterprise v1.2 supports the following operating systems:

Google AndroidAndroid 4.3 and later
Apple iOSiOS 8.1 or later
Apple macOSOSX 10.7 and later
