Apple splits iTunes into three apps

Last updated:

Apple has split iTunes into three apps: Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple TV. Each exists in its own right, with Apple splitting its entertainment ecosystem into three apps for a clearer, more simplified user experience.

So, if you fancy watching a TV show or film, you head to Apple TV. Want to tune into your locally-stored tracks, downloads, playlists or the Apple Music streaming service catalogue? Head to Apple Music. Want to plug into your favourite podcast? You get the idea…

Apple Music offers its 50m+ streaming subscription catalogue alongside a user’s downloaded, purchased and stored (perhaps CD-ripped!) songs.

Apple Podcasts opens doors to more than 700,000 podcasts, with a search tool as well as recommendations and curated collections by editors.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering said “The future of iTunes is not one app but three: Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple TV,”

The approach is similar to what Apple already offers on the iPhone and iPad. Apple debuted iTunes 16 years ago to manage digital music for the iPod, which paved the way for the iPhone.

The changes are coming with the new Mac software update, Catalina. Windows versions of iTunes aren’t affected.

Users who sync their iPhone with a Mac now do so in the Finder app.
