250,00 Apple accounts hacked but only for ‘jailbroken’ phones

New research conducted by Weiptech and Palo Alto has revealed that over 225,000 Apple accounts have been hacked into, compromising the user’s login details, device IDs and purchase receipts. Unsurprisingly, all the affected Apple accounts were of those who have jailbroken their iPhones.

‘Jailbreaking’ your phone is when you remove the hardware restrictions on iOS and allows you to access banned apps and customise your phone, among other things.

However, as it is not approved by Apple and it is done using unauthorised tools, it’s also an easy way for malicious people to instal malware on your phone, iPad or Apple TV.

The Malware, KeyRaider, uploaded all of the stolen information to a separate server.

Because this server wasn’t secure, the researchers who discovered the hack managed to hack into it, and download some of the stolen data before they were cut off.

Popular jailbreaking tools like Cydia install malware which steal information from iPhones and upload them in separate servers which can easily be hacked into.

Since Apple does not approve of jailbreaking, the affected Apple accounts are not protected by the company’s security systems which lead to such vulnerability.

The research also revealed that Apple accounts in iPads and Apple TVs can also be hacked into, apart from iPhones. However, if you haven’t jailbroken your device or do not intend to in the future, you need not worry as such malware would find it very hard to get inside your devices.

Of course for anybody who has ‘jailbroken’ their device, this is extremely worrying news – but those who haven’t are safe.

How to avoid being hacked

  • Don’t download any third party apps that haven’t been sanctioned by Apple
  • Change your passwords regularly
  • Keep your sensitive emails secure, use different passwords for different email accounts
  • If you have jailbroken your phone, change your passwords (or even better, don’t jailbreak it)
  • Take your devices to the Apple store if you have any queries and you’ll get a free consultation

You have to question whether jailbreaking your phone is really worth it.  Is having your data compromised worth the benefits of a jailbroken phone?
