Are BlackBerry contributing to the lack of BlackBerry 10 sales?
When the last financial quarter’s results were announced it became clear to all but the blind that BlackBerry are struggling to sell BB10 devices.
Many arguments have been put forward for this but the reality is that 2.7 million devices shipped (not sold) is a poor figure by most sensible peoples standards.
However, when analyzing this a little further, are BlackBerry actually contributing to the lack of BlackBerry 10 sales?
Now that statement will no doubt raise a few eyebrows and smirks of laughter in certain places but let’s look at this a little.
BlackBerry Launch Event
On January 30 this year BlackBerry held a major event in several cities around the world to launch BlackBerry 10. At that event they announced the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10. The all-touch BlackBerry Z10 was to be available immediately but the Q10, a device with a physical keyboard, was not going to be available for a few months.
Now there lies the rub. By announcing that the Q10 was coming at the same time that the Z10 was released, many BlackBerry users instantly decided they would wait for the device that came with the physical keyboard – the BlackBerry Q10. This naturally would have had an impact on sales of the all-touch device, the Z10.
Was it prudent for BlackBerry to announce the Q10 at the same time? Time will tell really.
Now move forward to today and we have three BlackBerry 10 devices available, the BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and the Q5. We also know that BlackBerry need device sales now.
Shortly after the last disastrous results, leaks started appearing on the interwebs of an upcoming 5″ BlackBerry 10 device. This is a device that we first leaked specs of way back in October of last year. It seems to have taken a long time for this device to actually hit the streets and the device specs have changed since then – and not in a good way.
It is not a coincidence that more and more leaks of this device, to be called the BlackBerry Z30, are appearing and I don’t think there is much of a doubt that these links are BlackBerry led.
Now we have a feeling of deja vu.
Anybody considering the BlackBerry Z10 now, will have reason not to. If they know that there is a 5″ device coming then it is likely that many will hold off on buying the Z10 at this point in time.
This could have a similar impact on sales of the Q devices in the same way the Z10 was affected by knowledge of the upcoming Q10.
What do you think? Knowing that the BlackBerry Z30 is coming, will you hold off on buying a BlackBerry 10 device?
